The Art and Spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony
Linked to Zen Buddhism and the tea ceremony, the Raku firing technique was discovered by the ‘great masters of Rikyu tea’ from the 16th century onwards.
Tanaka Chojiro, a potter of Korean origin, was given the title ‘Raku’, which means ‘ease, joy, pleasure’, for creating these exceptional bowls.
Ceramics removed from the kiln incandescent are placed in fuels that ignite instantly.
Glazes loaded with metallic oxides (copper, silver, cobalt, etc.) produce metallic lustres.
The crackled appearance of unique and original pieces is due to the thermal shock caused by rapid cooling.
During reduction, the smoky black becomes indelibly fixed.

Raku ceramics courses at the Atelier de Souspierre
Giving everyone the practical means to deepen or initiate personal and experimental research in ceramics.
A week of rejuvenation in contact with the clay, immersing yourself in this soft material and discovering meditative gestures.
Open yourself up to the passion and magic of fire and its purifying energy.
It is the fire of joy that brings light and transforms matter and beings.
Main subjects studied during the course : 
- Clay: composition and preparation
- Making pieces using modelling, blending, slab, pellet and wheel techniques.
- Engraved and painted decorations with engobes (calligraphy). Polishing
- Enamelling and firing at the end of the week: defiring, reduction and smoking.

Raku workshop

For people who know how to make ceramics
Preferably bring your own biscuit pieces
- Composition and preparation of glazes :
lustres, copper matte, bare Raku, vitrified engobes
- Firing: defiring and experimenting with the possibilities of firing and reduction in various fuels (straw, wood shavings, crumpled paper, etc.).
